Train to be a Youth Leader

Are you 16 to 24?

Can you work well with children and young people?

Want a career working in the community?

What you get

The Trainee Youth Leader Apprenticeship Programme (TYLAP) lasts from one to three years and is a great way to:

  • Get new skills - in leadership, communication and team work
  • Gain experience - working with children, young people and youth workers
  • Get recognised qualifications - in youth/community work
  • Get employment - in the second and third years
  • Build your confidence - by developing your strengths
  • Improve your chances of getting a job - in any area

TYLAP lets you learn from other young people who've become qualified youth workers. They'll also give you advice and support and take care of you.

What you can give back

  • Once you're trained up, you can help young people because they learn from you
  • You enrich the community by becoming a positive role model
Leighanne Marie left school with no qualifications, went to prison at 16 and had a baby at 19. She is now in her second year at TYLAP and will soon be heading off to uni.

Leighanne says: "No matter what, there is always someone willing to give you a chance. Regardless of my past, TYLAP has helped me build my confidence and given me the encouragement and self-belief that I can achieve whatever I want to in life; and truly my achievements so far are beyond my wildest dreams."
