Sue Bowman, Vice Chair of Clapham Park Project, has been awarded an MBE for her services to the community. A resident of Clapham Park (SW4) since 1979, Sue has spent many years giving up her time to work with the community. Her volunteering history has included helping children with their reading, mathematics and swimming at the Holy Trinity School in Upper Tulse Hill, in the 80s/90s. At the same time Sue ran a group for lone parents in Blenheim Gardens (off Brixton Hill).

Sue has also volunteered at local youth centres, including Clapham Youth Centre on Lyham Road, where she helped organise various jumble sales and worked to provide a holiday programme for young people.

In 2000 Sue became a member of the Clapham Park East Tenants and Residents Association because she wanted to work with local people to improve Clapham Park. Soon Sue became the Vice Chair and continued in this role until 2006.

In 1999 Sue began working with a group of committed local residents to ensure that Clapham Park became Lambeth's New Deal for Communities area.

Sue got involved with Clapham Park Project New Deal for Communities because she wanted to improve housing, community safety, education, employment and health in Clapham Park.

Sue was on the Clapham Park Project Shadow Board, was elected as a Board Member in October 2002 and has been Vice Chair since May 2005.

Of her services to the community Sue said: "I've had financial, emotional and health problems in my life, as well as being a lone parent; but when things got difficult people have always stepped in to help me, so I began volunteering because I wanted to give something back to the community. I would like to thank my children, without whose encouragement I could not have got this far. I would also like to thank Clapham Park Project staff, current and former board members and of course my community for their continued support."
