Chris Wellbelove, Mayor of Lambeth; Steve Reed, the Leader of Lambeth; and local ward councillors paid Clapham Park’s Over 50s Social Club a special visit on Thursday 21 May.The social club, which is run by residents for residents, organises weekly Coffee Mornings and a monthly Luncheon Club, which provides a nutritious meal for 30 to 40 people. But the club is not just a venue for getting a hot drink or a nice lunch; it offers a welcoming environment for older people to get to know each other and to make friends, therefore reducing isolation and improving community cohesion. It also provides free transport to and from the venue for the elderly and mobility impaired. | The Over 50s Social Club was first started with a grant from Clapham Park Project (CPP) in 2005. Since then, CPP has helped the club organisers to secure external funding and encouraged them to set up a management committee made up of volunteers, which now runs the club. Angus Johnson, Chief Executive of Clapham Park Project, said: "Clapham Park Project has received fantastic feedback from residents about the impact of the club on their well being and quality of life. This is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our local organisers, who are happy to share their expertise with other estates in Lambeth interested in establishing a similar model."
