Could you explain the services included in E&T: Services included in the scheme are mainly focused around employability skills, CV Workshops, interview techniques, job search strategies, application forms and covering letters. We also run Skills for Employment courses fortnightly. If we can’t deliver the training then we outsource it to someone who can and have a referral system in place. We have referred a number of people to the Migrants Centre for ESOL. Who is eligible for services through the Employment Resource Centers? We are open to everybody within London but at the moment our main focus are people in the immediate area- Lambeth (though we are not limited to this). Anyone who is job seeking can use our services but for monitoring purposes we serve those aged16 and up. We really do reach a wide range of people with clients averagely ranging from 16 to 65 from different backgrounds.
How do you accommodate people who do not speak English? Anton: I have a decent command of Spanish but we also have access to individuals within CPP that speak some of the common languages spoken in the area for translation. If we really cannot communicate, we can refer people to one of our partners for ESOL. Is there a fee for your services? There are no fees for our services. The only instance where there could be a small cost involved is when we outsource the training, though we would always try to keep this to a minimum. What services are available for Job Seekers? In addition to those previously mentioned, we offer a drop in service once a week on a Friday (subject to change).
What kind of job search tools do you use? We mainly use internet access, phones, newspapers and a list of employment agencies covering various fields. We do have contact with agencies we can refer clients to also and continue to work on building relationships with agencies or organizations that can send us jobs directly. After we engage the client, identifying their skills, we can job match.
Do you have any contact with employers tohelp determine how you help clients? We’d like to engage with local employers to find out what it is people tend to struggle with during the recruitment process and address this.
What is the most common thing people need help with? It really does vary. Due to the climate we have had clients that are approaching us as it is there first time out of work after 25 years and are struggling to get into employment and some people have never had a job before and need help with everything from motivation to job search. We’ve had clients that struggle especially with CV writing as they have been with the same company for many years and haven’t had to revise it in so long ,so are unsure what is it employers are looking for.
What is your previous experience in Employment and Training and why do you enjoy your role? Fred: I have worked as an employment advisor before and did things like engaging, outreach, training, job search, working with employers etc. I enjoy the work I do because I am helping people progress with what they want to do and helping them to get a positive outcome. Often a new job can change lives; this is very rewarding for me. Anton: This new service is like a continuation of my previous role as a Future Job Fund Trainee where I undertook similar work to what I am doing now, just with more responsibility. I enjoy the job as it is a chance to help people that sometimes aren’t always catered for or seen as easy to engage with. I am able to easily engage with sections of the community that can often get left out as I am of a similar background, age and know the area well. How do you go about identifying the needs of the community in relation to E&T? Some things are basic such as CV writing and skills for employment. Other things are identified through engaging with clients. For example, a lot of clients recently have stated they would like basic IT training. We always ask what kind of training clients feel would benefit them with regard to employment. If there are enough people requesting it and we can do it, we will set up the training ourselves. If not, we will outsource it. Are there any other services you hope to offer? What are your hours and where are you located We are based at 1-4 Brixton Hill Place Mondays (9.30-5.30pm), Thursdays (10.30-1pm) and 71 New Park Road, SW2 4EN Tuesdays (9.30-5.30pm), Wednesdays (1pm-9pm), Thursdays (1pm-9pm) and Fridays 9.30-5.30pm.
