centrelaunch2The much anticipated launch of the Clapham Park Centre took place in September.

The Clapham Park Centre is a brand new learning centre at Richard Atkins Primary School.  The Centre was funded with £1million from Clapham Park Project and £500,000 from Lambeth Council, and is available for all members of the community not just the parents and pupils of Richard Atkins School.

The Centre’s key objectives are to:

  • Raise the educational aspirations and attainment of children at the school
  • Increase family learning and parental involvement in the school
  • Improve parents’ access to advice, health and social support
  • Provide social facilities to increase a sense of community in the area
  • Improve the co-ordination of lifelong learning initiatives in the neighbourhood and the school

Leader of the Council Steve Reed spoke at the launch alongside Chuka Umunna MP, Ex-pupil and accomplished artist Andrew Aarons, Head Teacher Julie Roberts, CPP Chief Executive Angus Johnson and Donna C. Henry-Chair of the Clapham Park Project. They addressed a packed audience of pupils, parents, councilors and invited guests.

Clutching his title belts, retired Boxer Danny Williams proved popular for photo opportunities after he answered questions from pupils and shared his story of his rise to fame though hard work and determination.

The centre will provide varied resources and services including; community activities, crèche facilities, study support, advice and interpreting services, breakfast club, adult learning, access to health and child support services, a studio for arts activities, ICT and refreshment facilities.

Parent, Kyla Roe said, ‘I think it’s good for the children, they need it. There is a musical facility and things for them to use, a new lunch hall and more space. They had it before but it wasn’t as good. There will be classes for the parents to go to as well so I think it’s worth it. It’s something that the school really needed definitely. ‘

The pupils are just as excited. Year 5 pupil, Boluwatife Dairo said, ‘It’s big and it has loads of room and space. I like it because we will be having our lunch here.’

Some of the courses being offered this autumn include ESOL, cookery, craft, ICT and family learning.
