The Trainee Youth Leader Apprenticeship Programme (TYLAP)

TYLAP, which is partly funded by Clapham Park Project, gives 16 to 24-year-olds the chance to:
  • Work with other young people
  • Gain youth work experience
  • Get an accredited qualification

TYLAP ad imageThe programme is for young people who want to develop their skills and experience working in the youth and community sector. Most of the students haven’t completed the Sixth Form or gone to college because they prefer to learn in other ways. TYLAP gives them a good mixture of training through:

  • Theory
  • One-to-one tuition
  • Learning on the job at local youth centres

TYLAP works because young people recruited from previous years help to educate and mentor the new in-take of trainee youth workers. The scheme prepares these new trainees to become youth workers in the future, and some of these trainees have gone on to further study at university and into employment after completing the first year of the course.

Natalie Morson, Apprentice Youth Worker, said: "The TYLAP programme has helped me to come a long long way. Before TYLAP I would never finish anything. I was totally lacking focus and motivation. I now feel like I have the support and encouragement from my peers to do something productive in my life"
