Young People and Anti-Social Behaviour

Reach In and Out

Knights Youth Centre imageIf residents complain about a problem in the area, we will always try our best to resolve it. Last Year, Clapham Park Project received lots of complaints about the behaviour of a group of local young people. So after talking to our partners, such as Knights Youth Centre and Thornton Safer Neighbourhood Team, we developed the Reach In and Out project.

These days, knife and gun crime is increasing and many teenagers are frightened of being attacked. We found that the 16-17 year olds who were causing concern in our area felt frightened too. Most of them were not in education, out of work and bored. But all of them wanted to change their lifestyle and increase their chances of getting a job.

Clapham Park Project is now working with Knights Youth Centre to help the teenagers to:

  • Get fit - through physical activities, cook and eat sessions and health checks
  • Get involved in the community - by attending the youth centre and taking part in local activities
  • Improve their skills - through a range of training courses covering employment, bike repairs, team work and behaviour management
  • Build their confidence - by giving them a personal action plan and support and advice from young mentors

So far, we’re delighted with the progress that the young people are making. They're responding well to new challenges, gaining new skills and learning to be more responsible. There is also much less anti-social behaviour in the area.
