Youth Programme Wins £200,000 Bid
Youth Programme Wins £200,000 Bid

The Youth Programme has been successfully awarded £200,000 over 3 years from Lambeth's Children & Young People's Service to build youth capacity in Lambeth.  It has been recognised that the main issue surrounding involvement in criminal activity in the area is economic viability, i.e. the “get rich quickly” phenomenon. The funding will be used to educate and empower young people in Lambeth and introduce them to attractive alternate options which are more sustainable than engaging in criminal activity.  They will be encouraged with tangible employment and training opportunities. The funding will also provide a range of services delivered at a grass roots level through:

  • Engagement of young people involved or in danger of involvement with gang related activities and gun crime, especially young Muslims at risk of radicalisation
  • Use of sport as a mechanism for involving young people in learning
  • Delivering Youth Club services based on the Notre Dame Estate

101 jobs evidenced by Shop for Jobs
Shop for Jobs

Shop for Jobs (a project which helps the long term unemployed find work and training) has reached the milestone of 101 jobs evidenced since April 2007.  Although the team has helped many more clients into employment, without a confirmation letter from the employer, a pay slip or copy of the contract, they cannot be evidenced.  Congratulations to the Shop for Jobs team for working together to make the project a success.

Leadership course helps local youth
Leadership course helps local youth

This years launch of a programme which offers young people, aged 16-24 the chance to work with other young people, gain youth work experience and obtain an accredited qualification, took place in April.
The Trainee Youth Leader Apprenticeship Programme (TYLAP) is particularly aimed at those who would not normally access formal learning structures such as College or Sixth Form and who want to develop experience and skills working within youth and the community

Recruits from previous years help to educate and mentor the new in-take of trainee youth workers.  All new recruits will have the opportunity to undertake work experience with local youth providers/centres and with Clapham Park Project’s successful holiday programme for young people.

Natalie Morson, Apprentice Youth Worker, aged 19 said: “The TYLAP programme has helped me to come a long long way. Before TYLAP I would never finish anything. I was totally lacking focus and motivation. I now feel like I have the support and encouragement from my peers to do something productive in my life”

TYLAP recruits have gone on to further study at university and into employment after successfully completing the first year of the course.

TYLAP is delivered by Knights Youth Centre, in partnership with Clapham Park Project.  The launch took place the Knights Youth Centre, Tierney Road, SW2, from 6.00-9.00pm.

Michelle Marquis, TYLAP Co-ordinator said:  “I am so pleased with the amount of young people that turned up at the launch to find out more, and those who completed application forms on the night.  As always I am so proud of the TYLAP team, both past and present who did a fantastic job.  I am very appreciative of the support and interest that Keith Hill MP, Angus Johnson (Chief Executive of Clapham Park Project), Donna Henry (Chair of CPP), Sue Bowman (Vice Chair of CPP), Junior Shabazz (Lambeth Council), Gill Keanily (Positive Activities for Young People, and Keith Snape (Clapham and Stockwell Town Centre Manager) gave us for the launch.”  For more information please contact Michelle Marquis or Karis Query, 020 8674 4055/coordinator.tylap@yahoo.co.uk

Danish Delegation Learns from Best Practice

Danish Delegation Learns from Best Practice

12 staff from a number of housing and regeneration organisations in Copenhagen attended a one day event at Clapham Park Project organised by the Copenhagen City Social Services Administration.   The main focus of the visit was to find out more about how to create and sustain urban neighbourhoods and strengthen social networks.

Staff from Kab - a leading not for profit housing organisation, and the Danish Housing Corporation, amongst others, were able to find out more about Clapham Park Project, tour the New Deal for Communities area and speak to Clapham Park Homes, the community led housing association.

Gitte Bylove Larsen, Deputy Head of Division at the Social Services Administration said of the visit: “It was very interesting to learn more about how you deal with the problems concerning social-housing, especially how Clapham Park Project embraces both the physical redevelopment of the former council housing stock, social-housing initiatives, employment initiatives and crime prevention initiatives.  The visit has given us new inspiration and ideas to address these challenges in Denmark.”
